ESTIM
Electric stimulation is a therapeutic treatment modality that applies electrical stimulation in treating muscle spasms and pain. It can help prevent atrophy and build strength in patients with injuries. It is also used to help circulate the blood flow
Ultrasound Ultrasound consists of high-frequency sound waves which, when applied to human tissue, penetrate deeper than any other heat modality. The benefits of ultrasound include decreasing inflammation and increasing circulation.
Soft Tissue Mobilization/ Massage
Soft Tissue Mobilization/massage is used to decrease scar tissue and adhesions that are typically associated with trauma to the soft tissue. Proper tissue integrity and fiber alignment allows for increased circulation to tissues, increased flexibility, increased muscle contraction and performance with decreased pain.
Progressive Resistance Exercise
A protocol of strengthening is developed and progressed by the physical therapist. Exercises are chosen based on the injury, phase of rehabilitation, and goals of the patient. Post surgical protocols are strictly adhered to as per surgical recommendations. A vast array of equipment and manual techniques are used to provide the resistance.
Joint Mobilization
When a joint becomes tight, self-treatment is ineffective. The most common symptom is pressure or pain with movement and a loss of range of motion. Specialized manual techniques are used to increase flexibility of the thick connective tissue around a joint. These techniques are most commonly performed on the shoulder, ankle, knee, and spine, but can be performed on any joint.
Gait Training/Gait Analysis
By observing an individuals walking pattern, problems with flexibility, strength, and posture can be identified and addressed to eliminate pain and restore normal movement.
Manual Traction
A therapist administers a gentle pulling force on the spine to correct disc problems, alleviate pain, stretch muscles along the spine, and improve mobility.
McKenzie Protocol
Spinal disc injuries are very successfully healed using this specialized technique in as few as six sessions. The program emphasizes patient education in self-treatment and injury prevention. Manual techniques such as traction and joint mobilization can be used if necessary.
Iontophoresis
This is the use of electric current to deliver medication through the skin. Typically, prescription steroidal anti-inflammatory or analgesics drugs are used. Medication is delivered directly to the area of injury in an attempt to control pain and inflammation. The problems that oral medication can cause are eliminated.
Heat and Cold Modalities
We use clay heating packs and gel cooling packs to isolate the area being treated and to offer lasting effects of modality. When necessary, we also use mechanically circulated ice water to further reduce swelling to an area that has acute or persistent swelling.
Paraffin Bath
Paraffin wax is an alternate form of heat application. The wax works as an insulator, sealing in the heat from the wax, as well as the heat generated from the body. The heat encapsulated by the wax, can relax sore muscles and tendons, reduce inflammation and promote circulation in painful joints and soft tissues. Paraffin therapy is an effective method of applying heat to relieve pain and stiffness in the hands and/or wrists.
Pilates
Pilates strengthens and lengthens specific muscle groups. It promotes maximum muscle strength while increasing flexibility, coordination and stamina which helps create more balanced musculature and promotes healthy tissue allowing for more efficient movement patterns.
Kinesio Taping
Kinesio taping provides assistance and support to your musculature surrounding affected joints to decrease pain, overuse, and inflammation, as well as increase your postural awareness. Kinesio taping is lightweight and allows your affected extremity to continue to move freely within its normal range of motion with decreased pain.
